Strasburg RR: Amish Country and the PA Railroad Museum
The Strasburg Railroad is now celebrating its 50th Anniversary! This Railroad has been frequented by my family often when I was younger. The "Road to Paradise" restores steam engines and antique coaches and runs them on the tracks through the amish fields for a peaceful day out. Across the road from the station is the PA Railroad Museum. They have hundreds of preserved railway trains, some of which are open to people to get on. Another place of interest is the Toy Train Museum, which is a ways down the road.
Strasburg RR: Ghost Whistle
At Carpenter's Crossing, the trains stop to perform the 'ghost whistle'. As seen in the video above, the echo matches the train's whistle exactly. However, no one knows what causes the echo.
Steamtown National Historic Site
This is a very large living Museum in Scranton, PA. The main event is a daily steam train excursion. In addition, there is a caboose ride through the yards and trolley rides from the trolley museum next door. A converted roundhouse serves as a museum and storage for the engines with a working turntable.
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR
The D & S RR is a historic line winding through the river canyons of Colorado. At many points the line is on the edge of a cliff high above the Animas River.
